This is definitely a step up production wise from his last Album, Painted.

Production

Lucky chose almost all new producers, aside from D’Mile, giving him a whole new range of abstract sounds. Lucky is known for his use of orchestra and instruments, so hearing him use digital beats and new rhythms shows his versatility as an artist. The tracks are textured with delicate sounds to exemplify the intimacy on these features.

Another gem about the project is that it involves subtle details that allows us to enjoy the creative process of “Table For Two.” In the song, “My Window” ft Mahalia, the track features a small sample from “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) by Missy Elliot. In addition to that, the track “Access Denied” featuring Ari Lennox includes a crossover sound between Neo-Soul and Latin genres.

Although the album only included one track with a solo performance from Lucky Daye, the various features on each of his tracks did not hinder listeners from enjoying his sultry voice, and beautiful lyricism. Each song provided its own vibe in every way, and every one of the collaborations complimented each other collectively. The featured artists were a beautiful addition to the album. From Ari Lennox to Yebba, Table For Two was keen on feminine inclusiveness. Starting the album with Yebba was such a  pleasant surprise, being that fans have been waiting for her to release something new. The combination of the two exudes talent and made you want to keep listening.

Lyrics

It is very obvious just from song titles that the album is talking about love. A lover trying to get through to their partner. “How much can the heart take,” you ask, when you leave me on read. This album isn't written in the honeymoon phase, it’s written in that hard space, where it’s unclear exactly how one another is feeling. The songs are constructed in a way that tells a story. Lucky talks throughout the album to further that story. Feelings and effort must be reciprocated. “If you can’t stand the rain, Then I can’t stand the sunshine.” This album is perfect for anyone in that hard space, that middle phase where you know you’re feeling each other, yet can’t be past the rough past, communicate your feelings and really start a relationship.

Cover Art

The Cover art for this album, although fitting for the album title, is not as artistic as his other albums. His past two album covers look like hand painted portraits, this album cover has a more modern feel, which is fitting for the EP’s aesthetic.

Marketing

He dropped “On Read'' February 3rd, and a promo video on February 5th, a week before the E.P. release. It seems as though he wanted this album to be a surprise. After the release of the album he released a Visual Poem that includes snippets of each song, accompanied by a cinematic experience showcasing components of the project.

FINAL SCORE = 8
